Not So Spartan Railings

We've been renovating our deck for over a year now and are finally coming to the end of it!  The final pieces of the new railings were installed a few days ago.  I originally envisioned a sleek contemporary design, however with an active toddler on the verge of walking I knew that the horizontal railings I longed for would be used as a step ladder by little climbing feet.  I kept it simple and stuck with this classic and child-friendly vertical design instead.

Not too exciting on its own I know.  However, by painting the railings a matte Spartan Gray they take on a very modern look and breath new life into a traditional design.  It's not a color typically found in homes in the Caribbean, but it works.  It picks up the tones in the metal roof and stonework found throughout the house and disappears into the landscape.

I considered a glass railing, but the cost and extra work of keeping it clean and fingerprint free made me think twice about pursing that option for the entire deck.  I choose to use the glass at the edges of the pool instead.  I had this seamless sheet of tempered glass 18" in height made for the edge of the pool.  We can now relax & enjoy the unobstructed views.

The final piece was the pool safety fence.  The shipping cost of bring in one of those removable child safety fences was ridiculous!  Instead I recycled pieces of our old railings and had it attached around the pool with small Tapcon screws so that it can be removed later without damaging the porcelain tile.  Although the old railings weren't an exact match to the new ones, by painting them the same Spartan Gray the differences are barely noticeable.

We couldn't be happier and love how it all turned out!

  2. Thanks for your comment & thanks for the link Alina! Unfortunately it wasn't the fencing that was difficult, it's the shipping to the VI. US post office priority mail is really the only was to go for small orders and the cost was outrageous!!!! The old railings worked out great!
